Fundamental Physics Seminar Series - Future Large Circular Colliders
2025.11.04 Talk Others
Image

Abstract

The last European Strategy for Particle Physics defined an e+e- Higgs factory as the highest priority for the future of particle physics. The best choice is that of a circular collider, which can provide much higher luminosities and can explore the whole range of electroweak physics, being therefore much more than just a Higgs factory.

There are two such projects in the world, the Future Circular Collider (FCC) being proposed at CERN, and the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), proposed to be located in a newly built laboratory in China. These colliders would be about 100 km in circumference and capable of producing e+e- collisions ranging in center-of-mass energy from the Z0 peak all the way to just above the ttbar threshold. Both infrastructures would operate in two phases, the first one colliding electrons and positrons (FCC-ee and CEPC) and then in a second phase installing a proton-proton collider (FCC-hh and SPPC) reaching center-of-mass energies above 100 TeV. The speaker will also describe a detector concept, suitable for both FCC-ee and CEPC, called Innovative Detector for E+e- Accelerator (IDEA).

About the Speaker

Dr. Paolo GIACOMELLI is an experimental particle physicist working at INFN Bologna. He has more than 40 years of experience in high energy physics, and has participated in several experiments: UA1, UA6, DELPHI, OPAL and CMS. He has given many important contributions and has had many important roles in all these experiments. He is also actively involved in managing several large EU funded projects, mainly on R&D for detectors for particle physics. Since a decade, he is also active in studies for a future large leptonic collider. He collaborates with FCC-ee and CEPC and since 2024 leads the Italian activities on R&D for future circular colliders. He is also responsible for IDEA, a detector concept designed especially for FCC-ee and/or CEPC. Dr. Giacomelli has also organized many important conferences in Bologna, like ICHEP in 2022 and LHCP in 2019.

IAS Distinguished Lecture - Small-scale Medical Robots Down to Cell Size Inside Our Body
2025.10.22 Talk Others
Image

Abstract

Wireless small-scale medical robots have the unique capability of navigating, operating and staying inside hard-to-reach, tight, risky and deep sites inside our body. This talk reports our recent milli- and microscale wireless miniature medical robots down to cell size that could achieve various minimally invasive medical functions, such as targeted active drug delivery, neural stimulation, clot opening, liquid biopsy, biofluid pumping, cauterization, and hyperthermia. Due to miniaturization limitations on on-board actuation, powering, sensing, computing and communication, new materials and methods need to be introduced in creating and controlling such robots. Moreover, they need to be tracked under medical imaging modalities, such as ultrasound, fluoroscopy, photoacoustic imaging, and MRI, for their precise and safe operation. 3D microprinting and assembly-based fabrication methods and biocompatible and multifunctional soft composites with embedded micro/nanomaterials are proposed to create novel medical milli/microrobots. Soft-bodied medical miniature robot designs enable active shape programming-based adaptive, multimodal and multifunctional navigation and functions, and safe operation. External physical forces, such as magnetic fields, acoustic waves and light, and physical or chemical (e.g. catalytic) interactions with the operation medium are used to actuate and steer such miniature robots wirelessly as a single robot or robot collectives. These robots are aimed to save lives of more patients by curing diseases not possible or hard to cure and decrease the side effects and invasiveness of disease treatments drastically.

IAS / School of Engineering Joint Lecture - Data Management Strategies for Space-Efficient Decoding and Planning
2025.11.03 Talk Others
Image

Abstract

Several key computer science tasks are traditionally solved via dynamic programming and need to work within the constraints of low-memory devices. This lecture presents two solutions that enhance space efficiency in such tasks. First, the speaker will show how to achieve space-efficient Viterbi decoding, used in speech recognition and probabilistic context-free grammar parsing. Then, he will outline how to make optimal planning decisions space-efficiently in a finite-horizon Markov Decision Process. Thereby, the speaker will showcase how data management expertise can deliver solutions in other domains. Lastly, he will glimpse into alternative time-efficient strategies for those problems.
